Unfortunately, we did not receive grant funding this year. We continue to provide a $20 programming discount to both Scouting and Guiding Units and would be happy to work with your organization to find funding.

2019 Mad Science Programs for Guides, Brownies & Sparks

Funding provided by NSERC

Through a grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), Mad Science programming designed for the Guiding curriculum can be accessed for only $2 per participating Guide, Brownie or Spark.

Mad Science Guiding Programs are Hands-on Workshops that are designed to satisfy badge requirements while maintaining the fun and excitement that Mad Science is known for. Programs are 50-60 minutes in length and can accommodate up to 30 participants. The Mad Scientist will come to your location. We need enough room for the Guides to get comfortable where everybody can see, a table for the Mad Scientist's equipment and access to electricity and water. All programs include takehome experiments and access to an ebook of home science experiments to share with Mom and Dad.

$2 per participant. Yes you read that right. Yes that includes taxes, travel charges and takehomes. Give a big thank you to NSERC! (the Mad Scientist will happily accept cookies which we can send to the friendly people at NSERC...yeah, yeah we can send them...)

Yes you can book more than one program for your unit, subject to availability.
This special offer is only available in areas serviced by the Niagara and London Mad Science offices. Programs must be booked and delivered before December 31 2019. There is a limited amount of funding available, bookings will be taken on a first come first served basis. Not all programs may be available at all times, please plan ahead. These programs are designed with individual unit meeting nights in mind, but if you are planning a special event involving multiple units, or weekend or summer events, do not hesitate to give us a call.

Giggles and screeches of amazement is the plan for the night as your mini Mad Scientists get excited about science! Sure, there are learning outcomes, but the main thing at this age is to create enthusiasm about science.

Bubbling Potions - States of Matter and Changes of State are introduced while girls are WOWed with Bubbling, foaming Mad Science potions!

Light & Colour - Explore Colour Theory and Properties of Light while making rainbows and watching fireworks!

Get Brownies excited about science while satisfying badge requirements of the Girls First program

Bubbling Slime - Bubbling, Foaming Mad Science potions with a little bit of polymer chemistry thrown in!

Get Guides excited about science while fulfilling requirements of the Girls First program.  A variety of topics are available:

Get excited about chemistry with chemical reactions and mixtures! Explore a variety of reactions, write invisible messages and create your own ooey gooey chemical concoction to take home.

Discover how hurricanes, tornadoes, and thunderstorms develop, and how powerful they can be! Our junior meteorologists will be making more reliable forecasts than the local news. Just ask students to consult their personal UV detectors to check whether it’s time to cover up!

Take off on a Mad Science exploration of the universe! Explore the solar system and beyond! Make your own star map to explore the skies at home.

Lights, Colour, Action

Uncover the hidden components in ordinary light! Reflect, refract and transmit as you explore the characteristics of light. There’s no fun like photon fun!

Find out how simple machines make our lives easier. Try out different types of simple machines: levers, wedges, incline planes, wheels and axles, and pulleys, through various hands-on activities. Rig a pulley system and build a Mad Science Drag Racer to take home.

The Wright Brothers would be proud as we follow in their footsteps and learn the fundamental principles of flight. Build your very own Mad Science

stunt plane (see image). You’ll be a Top Gun after this class!
